Canadian Payroll FAQ
Practical answers for employee setup, pay runs, remittances, payments, and year-end work.
Getting Started
Set up your Canadian payroll workspace.
NuvoWage is Canadian payroll calculation and recordkeeping software for employers, bookkeepers, accountants, and payroll teams. It brings employee profiles, pay runs, statutory deductions, pay stubs, remittance records, payment-file exports, and T4 year-end work into one organized workspace.
No. NuvoWage currently supports the non-Quebec jurisdictions listed in the product documentation and Tax Data page. Quebec payroll requires separate Revenu Québec calculations, deductions, and filings.
Create an account, add a workspace for the employer, complete Payroll Settings, add the applicable CRA payroll account, and create at least one employee. Accountants and bookkeepers can maintain separate workspaces for different clients.
Yes. Workspace owners can assign roles for maintaining employees, preparing payroll, reviewing results, managing payments, or completing year-end work. The current plan page shows the number of payroll team members included.
Yes. Locations organize offices, branches, and worksites, while CRA payroll accounts control remittances and T4 reporting. A location may have a default payroll account, but locations and payroll accounts remain separate records.
The current plan page shows the trial duration and employee-record limit. No credit card is required, and the trial does not become a paid subscription automatically.
The Pricing section shows the currently published monthly and yearly base prices, included employees, and additional employee rate in Canadian dollars. An employee is counted once per calendar month when included in finalized payroll, regardless of payroll frequency or correction runs.
Employees & Payroll Items
Profiles, compensation, earnings, deductions, and opening balances.
A payroll profile normally includes the employee’s legal name, province of employment, start date, pay schedule, compensation, TD1 settings, CPP and EI status, and applicable opening balances. Additional information such as SIN, address, and banking instructions is required when using the related payment or year-end features.
Add recurring items to the employee profile. NuvoWage prefills them into each pay run, where an authorized user can review, skip, or change the amount for that pay run.
Yes. You can add a one-time bonus, reimbursement, benefit, earning, or deduction without leaving the pay run. When appropriate, you can also save the item to the employee profile for future payrolls.
Opening year-to-date balances represent payroll processed before the employee began using NuvoWage for the tax year. They allow annual CPP, CPP2, EI, income-tax, and T4 totals to continue from the correct starting point.
Yes. Employee assignments should use effective dates so future payroll uses the new location or payroll account without changing previously finalized payroll records.
Pay Runs
Enter earnings, calculate deductions, review, and finalize.
Calculate Gross derives regular pay from salary, hours, rates, and optional overtime. Direct Amounts lets you enter the final regular gross amount directly. Both methods create the same structured earnings and deductions before statutory deductions are calculated.
Regular salary is calculated automatically from the employee’s salary and pay frequency. For an overtime-eligible salaried employee, the payroll user can enter overtime hours, a fixed overtime rate, or an approved overtime amount.
The pay date selects the applicable effective-dated federal and provincial payroll package. The pay-period start or end date does not select the tax package.
Verified means the supported calculation path passed the available automated checks. Needs Review means one or more warnings require payroll review. Unsupported means NuvoWage cannot complete the calculation using the current supported rules.
NuvoWage can calculate payroll from entered or configured hours, rates, and amounts. Employers remain responsible for determining overtime, vacation, statutory-holiday, and other employment-standards entitlements unless a particular rule is expressly identified as supported.
No. Finalized payroll is locked to preserve payroll and year-to-date history. Use the available reversal, void, or correction workflow instead of changing finalized values.
Tax & Remittances
CPP, CPP2, EI, income tax, and CRA liabilities.
NuvoWage uses effective-dated CRA T4127 formulas together with the applicable federal and provincial rates, brackets, constants, credits, CPP, CPP2, and EI data selected by pay date.
No. NuvoWage is designed for the supported payroll scenarios described in its documentation. Unusual, incomplete, or unsupported situations are flagged for review rather than silently calculated using assumptions.
No. NuvoWage calculates and organizes remittance liabilities. The employer remains responsible for confirming its remitter type, due date, payment amount, submission, and CRA confirmation.
No. NuvoWage is independently developed payroll software. References to CRA publications and T4127 describe the sources used for supported payroll calculations and do not imply CRA affiliation or endorsement.
Authorized workspace members can inspect published tax packages, rates, brackets, thresholds, credits, constants, and effective dates. Published tax data is read-only and cannot be changed from an employer workspace.
Payments & Year-End
AFT files, pay stubs, T4 PDFs, and T4 XML.
No. NuvoWage can generate a Payments Canada Standard 005 AFT file for an authorized user to review and upload through the employer’s financial institution. The employer and bank control validation, authorization, funding, release, and settlement.
The file must use the employer’s bank-approved originator settings and may require institution-specific configuration. Employers should validate the file and complete testing with their financial institution before using it for live payroll.
Authorized payroll users can download an individual pay-stub PDF or a package for the complete pay run. Employee, employer, earning, deduction, and payment information should be reviewed before distribution.
The T4 PDF is the employee copy of the slip. T4 XML is the machine-readable information return prepared for CRA electronic filing and contains the applicable employer summary and employee slip records.
NuvoWage keeps T4 slips, summaries, and XML return records separated by CRA payroll account. A separate T4 return must be prepared for each payroll account.
No. Downloading creates a file for review. An authorized person must submit it through the applicable CRA electronic filing service, review the filing report, correct any rejected returns, and retain the confirmation.
Account & Security
Access, sensitive payroll data, and account management.
NuvoWage restricts payroll information by workspace, role, and assigned access. Sensitive SIN and banking values are encrypted before storage. Employers should still grant access only to people who require payroll information for their work.
